Chateau Calon Segur 2022 – the balance and richness of a Saint-Estephe red wine
The estate: Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood across the Garonne. In the early 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus founding the label of this Saint-Estèphe 3rd Grand Cru Classé.
Chateau Calon Segur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century. In 2012, the estate was acquired by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines with the distinctive style that characterizes the appellation.
Château Calon Ségur is also famous for the label that adorns its bottles. Since the 18th century, the heart has been the symbol of the estate, inspired by the words of the Marquis de Ségur: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” For almost three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur have remained loyal to this iconic estate.
The vineyard: Château Calon Ségur 2022 comes from a 55-hectare vineyard, 48 hectares of which are in production. Planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravel dating from the Quaternary period, with a fine layer of lacustrine clay on top, the vines are on average 21 years old and produce exceptional Saint-Estèphe wine.
Winemaking and ageing: The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo the first sorting on the vine. They are then processed using a vibrating de-stemmer and a manual sorting table. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with a vatting period of 18 to 21 days. Microbullage and co-inoculation with exogenous yeasts and bacteria in stainless steel vats are part of the process. The wine is aged for 20 months in new barrels.
Blend
Chateau Calon Segur 2022 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (24%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Petit Verdot (1%).
