The complexity and richness of a Pauillac Premier Cru Classé

The estate: Château Mouton Rothschild has its origins when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction in 1853. Situated in the heart of the Médoc, in Pauillac, he rechristened the property as Château Mouton Rothschild. In 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild assumed control of the estate. A forward-thinker, he initiated the direct bottling of wine on the estate, concurrently designing its iconic label. The year 1973 marked the elevation of Château Mouton Rothschild to Premier Cru Classé status. As an emblem of the Pauillac appellation, Château Mouton Rothschild has played a pivotal role in showcasing Bordeaux’s great wines to the world.

The vineyard: Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2022 is crafted from grapes grown in a vineyard located northwest of Bordeaux, in the Médoc. The vines thrive in gravelly soils that retain and radiate heat during the night, aiding grape ripening. These impoverished, well-draining soils overlay a clay-gravel subsoil, imparting distinctive power, elegance, and tannic structure to Château Mouton Rothschild wines.

The vintage: The 2022 vintage was characterized by a hot, arid climate, interspersed with periodic rain showers that replenished the soils. Despite the scorching heatwaves, the vines adapted admirably due to their deep-rooted resilience. Flowering commenced ten days earlier than usual, and the grapes ripened under optimal conditions. Harvesting commenced in early September, yielding grapes of exceptional concentration and equilibrium.
