The elegance and character of a Pauillac Second Grand Cru Classé

The estate: As a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Château Pichon Baron stands proudly among the elite of Pauillac’s Grand Crus, situated on Bordeaux’s esteemed Left Bank.

The vineyard: Nestled near the Gironde estuary, Château Pichon Baron’s vineyards span 73 hectares of land, boasting a diverse mosaic of terroirs. Planted on meticulously drained Médoc gravel soils, the estate’s oldest vines contribute to crafting this iconic Pauillac wine.

The vintage: Following a cold, dry winter, a warm spring prompted early budburst. April saw a frost episode with minimal impact. May witnessed flowering and fruit set under ideal conditions. A sun-drenched, hot summer, interspersed with rain in mid-June and mid-August, revitalized the vineyards.

Winemaking and ageing: Precise plot selection and gravity-fed vatting in state-of-the-art facilities. Vinification occurs in a combination of wooden and stainless steel vats. A prolonged cold pre-fermentation maceration preserves fruit quality, supplemented by the addition of indigenous vintage sourdough during alcoholic fermentation. Maceration is conducted between 25 and 27°C, with meticulous extraction. Malolactic fermentation transpires under marc, accompanied by regular treading. Aging transpires for 18 months in barrels (40% new, 60% one wine).
