The balance and elegance of a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé
The estate: Chateau Pontet-Canet, classified as the 5th Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, has ascended to become one of the Médoc’s most iconic names under the stewardship of Justine and Alfred Tesseron. Renowned for pioneering biodynamic viticulture in Pauillac, Château Pontet-Canet consistently exceeds expectations, solidifying its position as a premier reference on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
The vineyard: Regarded as a benchmark among Pauillac’s esteemed wines, Château Pontet-Canet meticulously tends to its vineyards with utmost environmental respect. Employing horses for vineyard work to prevent soil compaction and embracing biodynamic practices, the estate’s technical teams expertly nurture the vines to express their fullest potential.
The vintage: Following a relatively cool winter, February saw temperatures surpass seasonal norms, leading to rapid flowering in May under favorable summer conditions. While June brought some rain, including two stormy spells, July and August were characterized by scorching weather. However, the clay soil and adept vineyard management mitigated water stress.
Winemaking and ageing: Château Pontet-Canet 2022 undergoes ageing with 50% in new barrels, 35% in concrete amphorae, and 15% in one-wine barrels.
