The smoothness and richness of a Saint-Émilion wine

The estate: Chateau Quintus is the culmination of the terroirs of Château Tertre Daugay and Château L’Arrosée, acquired by the family company Domaine Clarence Dillon in 2011 and 2013 respectively. As the fifth property in the Domaine Clarence Dillon group, alongside Châteaux Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Quintus derives its name from the Gallo-Roman tradition of naming the fifth child “Quintus.”

The vineyard: Château Quintus is a Saint-Émilion wine crafted from a 42-hectare vineyard boasting a unique mosaic of terroirs. With an average vine age of 30 years, the vines are planted on the plateau, spanning a succession of south-facing limestone strata, as well as on south-facing clay-limestone and gravel soils to the north of the property.

The vintage: Winter brought relatively dry conditions that persisted into early spring. Bud-break, occurring by the end of March, and vegetative growth were hindered by several days of frost. Subsequently, warmer weather prevailed from April onwards. Reduced human intervention in the vineyard facilitated good ripening without any scalding. The vines endured a hot summer, with light rain in early August unlocking the ripening process. Harvest commenced early in perfectly healthy terroir, where the clay-limestone soils retained their freshness. Despite their small size, the grapes were of excellent quality.

Winemaking and ageing: Meticulous sorting in both the vineyard and cellar ensured only the finest grapes were retained. The wine was aged in barrels (38.9% new).

Blend

  • Merlot (58.5%)
  • Cabernet Franc (41.5%)
